Newsletter May 07

Welcome to our third newsletter, bringing you all the latest news and views from Musical ARC.

The Monday Group

Our main Musical ARC group has continued to meet weekly at the West Park Centre. Last year we were concentrating on music and dance, creating Lost Luggage, which has now been filmed for a short documentary (details below). In 2007 we have been making a new foray into the world of classical music………..

BachPlus Piano Project

In July 06, Musical ARC collaborated with Leeds International Pianoforte Competition to host a highly successful workshop with the Gould Piano Trio. Dame Fanny Waterman, Artistic Director of LIPC described the occasion as “an inspirational musical experience worthy of television. An extremely worthwhile project and this collaboration should be explored further".As a result the Outreach Team of the LIPC invited Musical ARC to undertake a longer project with renowned classical pianist Benjamin Frith. They have been working together since March 07, using a keyboard suite by JS Bach as inspiration for some new pieces of music. Four new members have joined the group for the experience. The results can be heard, together with the original Bach, in a unique series of concerts (see below).

This project has been jointly funded by Arts Council England and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition.

Report of Lost Luggage 07

Many of you will have caught one of the performances of Lost Luggage last year. It was one of our most successful projects to date, with 5 performances and 50 people taking part in associated workshops. It was the first collaboration with a dancer (Beth Cassani), and the first time we had used words and music to tell a single story. Comments included “wonderful”, “very moving” and “thought-provoking”.

If you missed it last year there’s still one chance to catch a performance, at Square Chapel in Halifax on 14th June (details below)

New Musical ARC Group

We are hoping to set up a second Musical ARC group for young people 16 - 25 yrs with a learning disability. There will be a taster session for anyone interested in joining on Wednesday 30 May at the West Park Centre  1 – 3pm. Contact ourselves or Chani at People in Action for more details: Tel 0113 247 0411.

Film

We were fortunate to obtain a grant from Awards for All to make a short film featuring footage from Lost Luggage performances and workshops. This fascinating documentary by film-maker Andy Wood gives a real insight into Musical ARC, the people and the music. There will be first screenings at the BachPlus concerts on 14 and 23 May (see above) and it will soon be available to buy as video or DVD - contact us for details.

Musical ARC is supported by Awards for All, Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales, Yapp Charitable Trust and:
